Awards, Cash & Prizes and 1099s at Tax Time

In doing some research into this I felt that readers here should know the particulars so as to avoid such tax-time pitfalls. The hosting organization of this show was American Women Artists. Below is the prospectus that artists were given access to prior to entry. You can see where it states that among the awards, some entries may secure a “National Magazine Ad Awards valued between $1,500 to $4,250

See if you can spot where in this prospectus it warns that you will be responsible to pay tax on hundreds or thousands of dollars in unsolicited (and possibly useless) gift certificates and a relatively arbitrary “perceived value” of a “National ad” in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. I would expect it to be listed in the liabilities section, but instead, that section focuses more on the fact that nothing is refundable and that accidental overpayment will be considered a “donation.”

I would just like to sneak in a little commentary here on magazines in general. First, I do think FAC is a good magazine. I’ve been featured in it in the past and so have many of my colleagues. I have indeed found some great articles that I’ve enjoyed immensely and I’ve recommended the magazine to individuals and groups within a number of contexts. With that said, you should always be careful when navigating advertising costs in a context like this. First, when a publication is described as a “National” magazine, you may be apt to think that the readership is in the six-figure (and up) range. For example, a big magazine like National Geographic boasts over 3.5 million readers in the US.

Now I don’t expect a more niche publication to rival such numbers as found with NatGeo–but FAC boasts that “Each issue reaches an average of 67,000* loyal readers who are passionate about discovering the finest in representational art.” Did you notice the asterisk on the number? This connects to a footnote on the site page that this number includes a 3.5 time pass along rate which means they expect each issue to be passed on and thus attain a larger readership. This may well be true, but working backward, the actual distribution is, therefore, closer to 19,142 (67,000/3.5). A number close to this is echoed on the site https://www.gaebler.com/ (business news and information website for small business owners, entrepreneurs and others.) This site gives business owners another glimpse at readership to better decide if the costs are worth it (link follows). They state, “The magazine has an approximate audience of 22,000 readers. Published in New York, New York, this magazine is a well-known consumer publication. It is owned by Streamline Publishing, Inc. (Fine Art Connoisseur - Magazine Advertising Costs)” I mention this only as artists tend to be the subject of a good deal of arbitrary price gouging as they are often very motivated to get their efforts some exposure. Magazine ad costs may be well worth it-- but just make sure you do some research before dishing out any hard-earned money (or paying tax on a rather expensive ad that you didn’t ask for.)
