Here’s a great video illustrating how SHIFTS towards a hue are all you need for great effect rather than adding a literal or complementary hue. This is a video made by Jeremy Vickery, a digital artist who has worked on many Disney animations and computer games such as The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Brave, Inside Out, Uncharted, Assassins Creed, Days Gone and more!
This artist brings up a number of issues that artists should definitely be aware of. His explanations are a little confused/conflated, but I’m happy to see some videos like this aiming to offer pragmatic applications to what often comes across as more “esoteric.”
I knew it was a factor, just didn’t realise it was that extreme. I will definitely have to keep that in mind if/when I make it back to painting. Thanks for posting it, very helpful.
